reasons to use mullvad VPN, commonly shared to my friends as a recommendation

Here's why you should never use free VPNs, this is highly accepted cybersecurity advice.

I would personally recommend Mullvad, for the reasons I will list below.

Mullvad actually runs their servers entirely in memory, so the moment a particular server is disconnected from power -- there is practically no data that is retrievable.

On top of that, Mullvad collects zero information about connections that can link them to you. When you sign up, you do not provide them with personal details like an E-Mail address, but are rather given an account ID which is your only way of accessing your account. Payments with purely anonymous crypto and cash are recommended (I believe they give you a 10% discount for crypto payments to encourage them). In case the server provider were logging request data, it would still be hard to associate them to users due to this system.

As others have already mentioned, they also implement a lot of privacy and security features into their client itself, which not many other providers implement. Mullvad has been an early adopter of Wireguard and has been investing into VPN tech for a while too, if that helps.

Also to note, there have been attempts by law enforcement in the past to raid their datacenters, and none have been successful. So they also have a good track record thus far.

They're also very cheap and have a flat pricing tier. No psychological trickery to make you pay just a bit more for monthly subscriptions over annual ones. Every plan, regardless of time boils down to $5 / month.

Mullvad was a company born out of ideological reasons, not financial ones. They have gone as far as to cut off entire sources of revenue such as online advertising because they believe it is hypocritical to use privacy unfriendly and targeted systems that they advocate against for profit. See this post for more details.

Mullvad has also shown time and time again that they care more about creating a great product than making money, as I previously stated. They are always implementing new security technology such as post quantum encryption, so that when quantum computing technologies exist, governments cannot use that to breach your privacy.

Mullvad is also almost entirely open-source for all platforms unlike Proton, which isn't fully open source. They have been audited by various expert and independent agencies, and most technical individuals tend to recommend it over all other VPNs by a long shot. They implement more security than every other VPN provider and it is going to be very hard for them to de-anonymize you as a user. Their hardware setup is literally raid proof, not even police raiding them can get your data out there like I previously mentioned.
